This Friday at Fancy Tiger Clothing!

We are getting really excited for our Denver Made event tomorrow night featuring the work of local furniture design duo Fin Art. Adding to the excitement are recent works from local artist Sandra Fettingis that were installed yesterday. You may already be familiar with Sandra's work from her laser cut acrylic jewelry line we've been carrying and this is a great opportunity to see some of her large scale works of art. For this series Sandra has moved away from her traditional medium of acrylic into wood, with layered patterns and bright accent colors.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow, Friday April 1st from 7pm-10pm to celebrate the work of these talented local creatives.

What's New in Store This Week...

We'd like to start this week's post off with a thank you for all of you who voted us Westword's Best Store on Broadway 2010! It is really an honor to be part of this street and we thank you all for your support. Okay now that the mushy stuff is out of the way let's see what's new in store this week, starting with Sandi Calistro. So you pretty much have to have been living under a rock not to have seen Sandi's work, be it her tattoo artistry or her line of cards we just restocked this week. Here's a peek at some of the new designs we picked up.

Canadian based line Preloved has sent us a little something to fall in love with this Spring. Their women's tops, short sleeve cardigans and dresses are spot on. These functional pieces are made from 100% recycled fabrics, often times repurposing previously loved garments. Also make sure to stop in and check out their offering for tote bags and clutches this Spring.

Fancy Tiger shorts are back! For those of you not familiar with these from last year, we have been thrifting for the finest in men's pants only to crop them down into shorts for you. These will be coming in weekly so keep an eye out for new styles and sizes. Also if you have a pair of pants you like transformed into shorts, we've got you covered, for a mere $15 for this alteration.

Farah's got two words for you men out there this season, red pants! Seriously you have to stop in to see these beauties in person.

Also new in store this week, are men's and women's t-shirts from Heavy Rotation. This Milwaukee based line as a knack for making prints that just scream to be worn.

Next up is Neuw denim. This vintage inspired denim line grew from the love three friends had for denim, particularly vintage denim that they would repair and tailor over time to achieve the desired look. This process of "Vintage Revision" results in a line of denim with a unique and personal style.

April Denver Made Interview: Fin Art

For this month's installment of Denver Made we are excited to welcome back local furniture design duo Fin Art. Fin Art is Rob McGowan and Ben Olson, two friends who grew up in Vail, CO. They started Fin Art about two years ago with the intent of creating a unique style of furniture that combines modern with repurposed materials. With limited formal training in industrial design, they found their own way of building through unconventional methods, which let them work outside of traditional techniques. Their last Denver Made event showcasing their handmade furniture was in October of 2009 and we are excited to see how their work has progressed since then. Recently Rob and Ben took the time to answer a few questions for us in preparation for their Denver Made event Friday April 1st.

(Fin Art, works in progress)

FT: How did you come up with the name Fin Art?

FA: We’re both inspired by coastal lifestyle. We don’t just make furniture; we make unique pieces of functional art, thus the ‘Art’ in Fin Art.

FT: How did you get your start?

FA: After graduating the University of Colorado in Boulder, we moved to Denver to try out ‘city living’.  Within the post college lifestyle, we were unable of afford new furniture so we began building our own. The first few pieces we made were built in the back yard of our apartment building. I remember when the weather rolled in we had to move our handsaws and basic tools into a storage shed until the rain passed.

FT: Where do you find the best inspiration for your work?

FA: Much of the inspiration we find is through visiting salvage yards and scrap yards.  We look for pieces with an interesting past, usually those with no future at all, and find ways to give them a new life and purpose.

FT: What music do you listen to when you work on your pieces?

FA: Lately we’ve been listening to a lot of Cotton Jones, Real Estate, Theophilius London, Mos Def, and The Cold War Kids. There really isn’t a time when we’re not listening to music.

FT: What would you like people to know about your work/process that isn’t evident when looking at it?

FA: People generally don’t understand the amount of work we put into our pieces. Things take more time than planned, and with using salvaged pieces we find ourselves reworking many of the plans to accommodate the unusual materials we work with.

Join us Friday April 1st from 7pm-10pm at Fancy Tiger Clothing, 18 South Broadway for this celebration of a new series of pieces by Fin Art. Enjoy a beer from Great Divide Brewery and toast to the to creators.

See you Friday!

What's New in Store This Week...

If you haven't already noticed our jewelry cases are bursting at the gills with new designers and styles. Thankfully we are planning on remedying this situation with some custom jewelry cases currently being built by local furniture design team Fin Art. So keep an eye out for a doubling of our jewelry selections in the weeks to come. With that said we've been adding new designers to the cases on about a weekly basis. First up is Jennifer Shon Jewelry from Los Angeles, CA. We were introduced to her work at the trade shows in Vegas and are excited to have her silk strung pendants available in store now.

Next up is l.darling named after the Denver based designer Leah Darling. Leah's use of mixed materials and repurposed pieces evoke a yearning for the past while introducing modern elements to connect to present day. These handmade creations have a personality all of their own through her use of old address numbers, natural shells and various other materials.

New Egg Press cards are in stock now. Choose from a variety of cards for any occasion; birthdays, congratulations, thank you and just because. These letter press cards come to us from Portland, Oregon.

EYEWEAR - It's worth it

Where would we be without accessories?  They're the little bits of style that help complete a look and sometimes even spearhead an outfit.  Our belts, our bags, our pieces of  jewelry that help distinguish us from an otherwise familiar look...we take them seriously.  And why shouldn't we?  Some accessories go beyond the seemingly trivial role of fashion and provide us with something more important.  Take that ring on your left hand.  There's a strong message there.  Take those exquisite frames than don your face.  Without them, you'd have parked your car in a ditch.  But sometimes looking good is as important as staying alive.  Take eyewear.  They give us confidence.  They allow us to change who we are.  Or at least change who we feel like.  A recent discovery in Boulder called Wink Optical got me thinking about such things.

Wink Optical takes an approach to service and selection that I find rare these days.  Wink believes that your eye's health is directly impacted by the quality of your optics.  And why shouldn't your eyes health be as important as the health of any other organ in your body.  They sell only small mom and pop brands that don't dictate the use of cheaper materials in lens selection.   Optics are all cut in house, they only sell frames that fit properly (despite how much you want to spend on a pair that may make you look like Lady Gaga but could compromise your prescription), and you can trust their advice (Anthony, our salesperson, spent his years honing his style expertise in New York in the 1970's).  Needless to say, I was extremely impressed.

Anthony brought out a pair that he deemed perfect for my face structure and skin tone.  I was on a mission to find some F#@k-you-hip bigger frames so I went with a vintage 1964 frame from their beautiful collection of vintage dead stock and ignored his selection.

My F#@k-you-hip 1964 frames

He approved of my choice and I left a happy man.  But their was something nagging at me.  Despite finding the exact frames  I was looking for, I felt a pull back to Wink the following Monday.  I just had to take my wife Jaime into this boutique gem.  But there was something else.  The SALT frames that Anthony had initially recommended for me were perfect.  I couldn't deny his skill.  It was that experience of meeting a master...someone who knows better than me what's right for me.  And then Anthony did it again.  He walked up to Jaime with a pair of frames that he deemed right for her.   With a precise skill and confidence he presented them almost as a gift.  Like saying, "I've been waiting for you".  The frames were stunning.  As stunning as the recommended pair I purchased that day.

It's service and selection that I look for.  Wink does it right.  SEE Eyewear  in Cherry Creek and EYELAB in the Highlands do it right as well.
