What's New in Store This Week...

This week we have been preparing for our Grand Opening event Friday February 4th from 7pm into the evening. This celebration will take place at our new location, 18 South Broadway, one door south from our previous location. With that said we've been getting in quite a bit of new product to help fill up the new location. Along with the new arrivals this week we got a re-order of your favorite Erica Weiner jewelry along with some new favorites. Here's a sneak peek at the new pieces that hit the cases today.

Also new in store this week, leather gloves from The West is Dead, just in time for the deep freeze weather we've been experiencing. These gloves are made from soft deer skin with stretch denim detailing at the cuffs.

Make sure to stop in this weekend for our big sale of the season. We only do two of these a year folks so make sure to stop by Saturday and Sunday to save up to 75% off selected items.

Fancy Holiday Gift Guide Part II

In this week's installment of the Fancy Holiday Gift Guide we are focusing on gift ideas that are from local designers here in town in celebration of this year's Holiday Handmade starting this evening. There are so many benefits to buying locally made goods, first off you are supporting your local creative community, you can find truly unique gifts for those on your list and finally you'll be keeping your money in the local community.

First up is a Fancy Tiger original creation, the walnut belt buckle. This simple belt buckle is sure to be a hit with anyone on your list. You can pair it with a black or brown belt both available at Fancy Tiger or pair it up with a favorite belt you already have.

Next up is something for the ladies on your list. Heavy Nesting has been a shop favorite of ours for a while. Sarah is the local lady behind this line of handmade bags. Check out her newest line of clutches made with an incredibly cool eco-felt from recycled plastic bottles. Her new design even incorporates movable pin-back buttons.

Our next featured locally made item is a true crowd pleaser, honestly it's hard to keep these in stock. Christa is the local designer behind Pistoli a line of accessories made from vintage type keys. Grab your initial or key of choice in the form of a pendant, a bracelet, ring, bobby pin, or for the men in you life choose from a tie tack or a set of cufflinks. 

Our final locally made gift idea is the ever popular bike spoke bracelet. Since we started carrying these a few months ago it's difficult to keep them in stock. They are great for those on your list who are in to cycling or up-cycling for that matter. 

If you are in the Denver area this evening make sure to stop by for the first night of Fancy Tiger's Holiday Handmade Craft Fair from 5pm-9pm this evening and 10am-4pm Saturday December 4th at the Sherman Events Center, 1770 Sherman Street. New Jewelry Makes for Colorful Cases

Building on the theme of last week's product post, we are stocking up on new jewelry designs for the Fall. All these lines share a common theme of using color as a prominent element in their designs. Take Charlotte Kruse of Sweet Evie for example, this Los Angeles based designer uses repurposed leather scraps in curated color palettes to create accessories with a natural feel. We recently stocked our cases with some of her new earring and hair clip designs.

Carrying on with the theme of color Leslie Yang of the California based Fiesty Elle uses vibrant colors in the form of laser cut merino wool to create delicate accessories for women. Building on the success of her last shipment of earrings and hair clips we added a few new colors and a few new designs  in the form of feather earrings, necklaces and smaller hair clips. 

The feather earrings (as seen in the photos above) can be worn in one of two ways, hanging or folded to add dimension. 

We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Camille Falk Designs to the Fancy Tiger Family. This local jewelry designer adds mobile like movement to her seemingly effortless designs by using curved wire, the end result is an elegant one of a kind pair of earrings. Make sure to check out Camille's new line of earrings in stock now.

September Denver Made Interview: becky's buttons & things

September's Denver Made features the work of the lovely and talented Becky Wareing.  Working in multiple mediums, Becky's new collection is fun and playful, touching on everything from her popular anchor inspired accessories to refurbished pocket habitat compacts. Appropriately renamed, "beckys buttons & things", this new collection will showcase a broader creative focus, introducing hand embroidered vintage slips and unique dioramas.  Becky took a moment to answer some telling questions about her creative process and the future of her line.

FT: How did you come up with the name for your line?

bb: Pretty easily; I’ve always appreciated alliterations so I went with becky’s buttons. Since starting my business I have branched out from simply making pin-back buttons to exploring various different mediums. I am currently going through a period of re-branding my line to encompass all these mediums and leave room for growth, so it had now expanded into becky’s buttons & things.

FT: How did you get your start?

bb: I started becky’s buttons & things over seven years ago because of my fascination with the pin-back button. I always enjoyed collecting them and soon after starting college purchased my first button maker and started making one-of-a-kind buttons for friends of mine. After that I found people encouraging me to sell my work in local shops so I approached Kansas City Kitty in Fort Collins and with their support and guidance got my start selling my work as a consignor.

FT: Where do you find your best inspiration for your work?

bb: Everywhere, I always carry around a notebook that I am constantly writing down ideas in and doing quick sketches for possible future projects. I have always found inspiration in vintage style and can’t pass up a trip to the thrift store, but it is really important to stay connected with the local design community as well and the Denver Handmade Alliance has provided that outlet for me.

FT: What music do you listen to when you work on your product?

bb: I mainly listen to podcasts, my favorites being This American Life, Radio Lab and The Moth. I’ve also been listening to more alternative, folk music like Woods and Joanna Newsom as inspiration for this new line.

FT: What would you like people to know about your work/process that isn’t evident when looking at it?

bb: Everything starts with a pin-back button. Usually when I am brainstorming a new idea for a series I will start with making a button that serves as my inspiration for the line, whether or not the button is reproduced for sale. The new line that I will be debuting at the upcoming Denver Made event started with a button design I created a few years ago the Diorama-rama Series which served as my first mixed-media buttons fusing hand drawn backgrounds with flocking and model train figures. This was the stepping-stone that got me into dioramas. I also re-visit mediums from my childhood, I remember my dad working on his model train sets as a child or my mom’s embroidery or cross-stitch work. I’ve always been interested in incorporating craft-based mediums into my work that I can remember seeing at a young age.

New Arrivals and Things to Come...

Some new Tulle fashions for women hit the floor this week filling in the gaps with some 3/4 length pieces. A new pencil skirt is also hitting the floor today, but you'll have to stop in to check it out.

    

Both of these new styles come in teal and charcoal.

We also recently received a huge shipment of some new and favorite past styles from Toronto based designer Syn. Here's a peek at a few other new pieces to complement your summer style.

Bring some color into your life with new jewelry from Polli.

We've been carrying Polli for a couple years now and their work seems to transform and gain new elements at every turn. This Sydney based jewelry line has now become a staple in our cases and they were kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us so we can learn a little more about their line.

ft: Where does the name Polli come from?

p: The name Polli is derived from the material – polypropylene. Our first products were die cut, flat packed baskets made from brightly coloured Polypropylene. We liked the idea that our brand had a female persona but wasn’t a common name.

ft: When did Polli start and how has the line changed since its inception?

p: Polli started as a hobby, two designer friends selling their baskets at weekend markets 8 years ago. Today Polli is a thriving business employing 10 people with a commercial studio in Sydney’s inner west. Our product range has grown from baskets into jewelry and home accessories with over 100 designs in our portfolio. The materials used have changed from plastic to recycled brass and stainless steel.

ft: What inspired the new designs for the Spring season?

p: Polli designs are inspired by our everyday lives, travel and the environment. The Spring collection featured an Art Deco theme inspired by travel to NY and Art Deco architecture. This decorative styling translates well into earrings and necklaces and was hand stitched for two ranges in the Spring collection. The hand stitching allows us to add seasonal colours and makes each piece handmade in Australia.

ft: Polli makes home and fashion accessories. Has Polli ever considered getting into clothing or any other realms of design?

p: We’d love to make more home products and play with materials like salvaged timber. There are lots of designs on the drawing board but unfortunately we seem to always have a lot on our plate! Fashion design? It’s not really our area of expertise – I think we’ll leave it to the experts.

ft: Anything we should know about Polli that we don't?

p: The Polli team is expanding! We’ve had many studio babies over the years and last year designer Tess Lloyd had a baby girl who is currently crawling around, emptying any rubbish bins that get in her way and unplugging as many computers as she can! Designer Maja Rose is currently pregnant and due with her first this August.

Babies add a fun, chaotic element to the studio and the team here form an extended family with everyone pitching in to feed, change and play with the little ones... maybe a baby range will be the next project!

New Erica Weiner in Stock!

There is a certain curiosity surrounding the work of Erica Weiner. She has an incredible knack for melding a degree of oddity with beauty resulting in something that leaves you with that ah-ha moment of it being the perfect addition to your accessory line-up.  Her new work is no exception and of course we've re-stocked some past customer favorites.
